Mothers seem to understand quite well that their partners’ convictions as to their own paternity are based on the child’s resemblance to themselves. Married women frequently begin to dream about their child’s being physically similar to their husbands already when they are pregnant (Leifer, 1977), and after birth they attempt to persuade their partner, that the child resembles its father more than its mother (Daly & Wilson, 1982).
Anthropologist Sarah Blaffer Hrdy, who has documented the destructive effects of infanticide in several primate species, believes that concealed ovulation is also an effective anti-infanticide strategy. When a female hides her ovulation and mates with several males, rather than just one, she shields her offspring against infanticide by males because any one of them might be the father. Promiscuity and copulation during all times of the cycles is then a strategy for confusing paternity. Such matings might also gain for the female some parental care from all the possible fathers, so that she might receive food such as meat.
